Bike Headlight Test

August 28th, 2010 [print] Go to comments

I had nothing else to do tonight, so I thought I’d test out my headlight set-up.  Instead of using bike-specific lights, I use a pair of Brinkmann 3w LED flashlights, held to my handlebar with a couple Two-Fish Lockblocks light holders.

Riding down the right-side of a street, they cast enough light off to the sides to cover all the way over to beyond the curb on the other side of the street.  I didn’t want to get smacked by a car while I was taking pics with my tripod, though, so here are some shots at the trailhead to a small trail near my house.

With no lights, it’s literally pitch black out.  It was so dark that I had to operate the camera by feel, which meant setting it up using a light beforehand.

With just a single light, I can see well enough to feel safe on a trail or the road.  Keep in mind, the batteries aren’t even fresh.

With the second light on, it’s about as good as having a single car headlight.

Overall, the lights are extremely lightweight, as are the Two-Fish holders.  I have them aimed evenly right now, but I often keep one angled down slightly, and the other is used as a high beam.

Anyway, it goes to show you don’t need to spend a ton of money on expensive lights, at least for occasional use.  I might want something brighter, or with an even wider beam, if I was riding singletrack after dark, but for the road or bike paths, these work great.  Also, they run on AAA batteries, so I don’t have to put them on a charger or use special (expensive) batteries.
